A 58-year-old man from West Bengal, who was rescued near Brahmavar bus stand seven months ago while wandering in a mentally distressed condition, has recovered and been reunited with his family.

Toton Bera, a native of Bagnan in West Bengal, had reportedly been away from home for five years. He was found wandering around Brahmavar without having bathed for a long time. After learning about his condition, social worker Vishu Shetty Ambalpady rescued him with the help of the police and admitted him to the Udupi District Hospital for treatment.

With the sustained efforts of the hospital doctors, Bera gradually recovered. As his condition improved, he was able to share some details about his hometown. He repeatedly expressed his desire to return home, but his family was initially hesitant to travel to Udupi to receive him. The efforts to reunite him with his family received a boost through the support of Prasanna Darbe, an engineer, former trustee of the Kukke Subrahmanya temple and a volunteer associated with an organisation.

Deepak Das, a construction worker from West Bengal, also played a major role in the reunion. He accompanied Bera on the nearly 2,150-km journey to Bagnan and handed him over to his elder brother. The emotional reunion saw the brothers embrace each other after years apart. Commenting on the reunion, Vishu Shetty said such acts of service should inspire political parties, organisations, officials and society at large. He added that anyone genuinely willing to work for society could make a difference.
