A seminar titled ‘Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): A Living Example for Humanity’ was organised at Don Bosco Church Hall in Udupi as part of the concluding programme of the Seerat campaign conducted by the Udupi City Unit of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. Addressing the programme as the president, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Karnataka State Secretary J. Mohammed Kunhi said Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is regarded as one of the great leaders of humanity in history. At a time in the sixth century when wars were fought for even minor reasons and continued for years, the Prophet’s message promoted brotherhood, love, compassion and humanitarian values among people, he said.
The divine message worked to unite people as brothers despite the factors that divided them, he said, adding that it was unfortunate that divisions continue to exist in society today on the basis of religion, caste and other factors. “Dividing people is not the purpose of religion. Breaking human relationships is not the teaching of any religion. All religions emphasize values such as love, compassion, justice, truth and humanity,” he said. He called upon people to understand these common human values and contribute to creating a harmonious atmosphere in society.
He said the Seerat campaign was organized to introduce the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to people from different sections of society, particularly at a time when the need for religious harmony, humanity and peaceful coexistence is growing. The life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is not limited to Muslims but offers values relevant to the entire human community, he said. Love, compassion, justice, truth, forgiveness, respect for neighbors’ rights, concern for the poor and vulnerable, and respect for human dignity are values that remain highly relevant to society today, he added.
Speaking as the chief guest, Rev. Fr. Denis D’Sa of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Udupi, expressed concern over the growing atmosphere of hatred in society. He said politicians have even sown seeds of hatred in the minds of children. In the past, children belonging to different religions would sit together on the same bench without discrimination in classrooms, whereas the present situation is concerning, he said. “We need to think about what the state of society will be when these children grow up,” he added.
Writer, theatre personality and director Yogesh Master said all religions teach people to do good. The belief that “our religion is superior” is not religiosity but arrogance, he said. People should respect their own faith while respecting other religions and live together harmoniously, he added. Maulana Danish recited verses from the Quran. Dr. Shanawaz, chairman of the reception committee, welcomed the guests. Seerat campaign reception committee vice-president Musheer Ahmed Sheikh and secretary Khalid Abdul Aziz were present on the dais. Sarfaraz Manna compered the programme, while Faiz Ahmed proposed the vote of thanks.
