Karnataka Upa-Lokayukta Justice K.N. Phaneendra expressed strong displeasure over the non-functional and underutilized medical equipment at the Karwar Institute of Medical Sciences (KRIMS) and the lapses observed in the hospital. He said a suo motu complaint would be registered and an inquiry conducted into the irregularities at the institution. Justice Phaneendra made the observations during a surprise visit to KRIMS on Thursday. He conducted a detailed inspection of various facilities.
During the inspection, the Upa-Lokayukta found that CT scan, MRI and mammography equipment installed for the benefit of patients was either not being properly utilized or some of the machines were not functioning. Expressing concern over the costly equipment remaining unused, he directed the authorities to ensure that the machines are made operational and used for conducting necessary investigation of patients without delay. He also expressed displeasure over the lack of cleanliness around the hospital and raised concerns over sewage and contaminated water flowing out of the premises and reaching the sea. He questioned the functioning of the hospital’s sewage treatment plant (STP). Upa-Lokayukta also noted poor-quality tile work in the hospital building and inadequate ventilation. He said he would obtain the report relating to the construction of the hospital building for further examination.

He also inspected the attendance registers of doctors and staff and the cash book entry details. He said strict departmental action would be taken against staff found to have violated rules or neglected their duties.
